Teaching at Prep Department
Trinity School
Teaching in Trinity Prep
The Preparatory
Department consists of the Reception class and six other Year Groups. The
majority of lessons are taught by class teachers but Art, ICT, PE, Science,
Music and French are taken by specialist teachers. All classes are also well
supported by enthusiastic and committed teaching assistants. Our small classes
enable teachers to cater for every child's needs. Calss sizes are capped at 20
pupils.
Early Years at TRINITY
At Trinity, we are able to
offer effective, vibrant and up to date practice based on the new Early Years
Foundation Stage curriculum. As a result, we aim to put as much emphasis on
learning in the outside classroom as there is inside. We aim to maximise the use
of our extensive grounds and make our learning environments as exciting and
inspirational as possible.
We believe in the holistic
education of the child and with careful planning, we aim to make the child’s
learning as varied and individual as we are able. By capitalising on our smaller
class sizes, our continuous observational assessment allows our excellent
teaching staff to identify where each child is in their learning and where they
need to go next. This guidance allows our teachers to plan bespoke and
considered learning plans; each individual child is central to this process.
Key Stage 1 at TRINITY
The transition from the Early Years at Trinity into Key Stage One is as smooth as we can make
it. Our Prep 1 classes adopt a “Highscope,” philosophy to learning, which allows
the child opportunities to learn and discover through play and investigation and
choice. Our curriculum is guided by the National Curriculum expectations, which
we are able to adapt and enhance for the needs of the individual child. We are
committed to smaller class sizes, this allows our teaching staff the opportunity
to listen to each child read a variety of texts and genres on a daily basis. Our
children have daily, synthetic phonic sessions as well as having an expectation
of using ICT within most of our cross curricular areas of learning. Mathematical
learning is an additional daily focus. Our children continue to learn
effectively in and out doors, continuing to make use of our fantastic grounds as
inquisitive learners.
Our statutory assessments
demonstrate that each child reaches their full potential at the end of Key Stage
1 and we work hard to ensure that this potential continues to be met as the
children progress into Key Stage 2
Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, we encourage children to begin to take responsibility and to become more
independent. Managing and organising their possessions, in the classroom and to
and from school, now becomes more important as they prepare for life beyond
Trinity Prep.
Homework is set 3 times a week; this ranges from 20-30 minutes. All children are
encouraged to read at home as well as in school daily. There is supervised Prep
after school for any Key Stage 2 child who wishes to do their homework in
school.
Our oldest pupils in Prep 6 act as prefects for the younger pupils. They are allocated to
specific classes to help support pupils throughout the school. They take an
increasingly active role in School Council and in our Recycling Initiatives. CAB
(Children Against Bullying) representatives are voted in for each class during
our PSHE lessons. A parent CAB mentor sets up a programme where children learn
how to deal with tensions in the playground. Pupils in Prep 6 are elected as
House Captains. The ultimate accolade is of course that of appointment to Head
Girl or Head Boy. When you visit our school, you will meet these talented young
people, the best ambassadors for Trinity Prep.
