Academic Study in the Senior Department

Trinity School

Academic Study

In Key Stage 3 (Years 7 – 9) pupils study a wide range of subjects  which gives them a broad academic foundation. Assessment is ongoing with the additional focus of yearly examinations. The Learning Success Department  gives support to those pupils who require it whilst those identified as gifted and talented are challenged appropriately.

In Years 7 and 8 a specially designed Curriculum Enrichment programme provides pupils with the tools to become independent learners, which proves invaluable as they move up the School. In Year 9 pupils will decide, with appropriate guidance, which subjects they will study at GCSE and they will start their new GCSE timetable during the Summer Term of Year 9.

Studying in the Senior Department at Trinity School

In Key Stage 4 (Years 10 – 11) pupils study a core curriculum which includes English, Maths, Science and Religious Studies GCSEs, Physical Education and PHSME. To complement the compulsory subjects, pupils also study a number of optional subjects which include Business, EAL, Economics, French, History, German, Geography, ICT (CLAIT Plus) Music, Physical Education and Technology (Design or Food). Work experience, careers advice and transition into the Sixth Form  are also significant features of pupil’s time in this Key Stage as they make important decisions regarding their future.

Alongside the academic curriculum, pupils in the Senior Department are encouraged to engage in a range of extra-curricular activities  as these help to develop happy, positive and confident individuals. Opportunities abound after school, at weekends and in the holidays with CCF , creative activities, drama, ICT, music, skiing and adventure holidays and a wide variety of sports.

Involved in discussion at Trinity School

Progression to Sixth Form  is usual, with pupils in Key Stage 4 being given plenty of advice about subject choice and career options as GCSEs approach. Life in the Sixth Form  is much more like university life, with pupils being encouraged to become independent learners, whilst still having the luxury of the safety-net which Trinity staff do provide.

It must be borne in mind that every Trinity pupil is valued as an individual. Success in the Senior Department is not focused solely on the outstanding academic achievement of our pupils but also, and in fact primarily, on the development of all pupils as caring, responsible members of the School and wider community.
